New Orleans Extends Healthy Homes Registration Deadline to June 15, 2025

New Orleans landlords have been granted a reprieve: the deadline to register one-to-three-unit rental properties under the city's Healthy Homes Ordinance has been extended to June 15, 2025. This extension offers property owners additional time to comply with health and safety standards mandated by the ordinance, ensuring safer living conditions for tenants.

The Healthy Homes program, initiated on January 1, 2024, requires landlords to obtain a Certificate of Compliance, verifying that rental units meet specific criteria such as functional fire and smoke detectors, adequate heating and cooling systems, and absence of mold and pest infestations. Originally, the registration deadline for smaller properties was set for May 1, 2025, but the city recognized the need for more time to facilitate compliance.

Landlords can complete the registration process online via the city's OneStopApp or in person at 1340 Poydras St., Suite 800, during regular business hours. Failure to register by the new deadline may result in penalties, including fines and potential legal action.

For tenants, the ordinance provides a mechanism to report substandard living conditions. Complaints can be submitted through the city's 311 system, and tenants are protected from retaliatory actions by landlords when following the proper reporting procedures.

This extension underscores New Orleans' commitment to enhancing housing quality and safety, reflecting a collaborative effort between city officials, landlords, and tenants to foster healthier living environments across the city.
