Louisiana State Representative Delisha Boyd has introduced a new bill aiming to improve mental health support systems at colleges and universities throughout the state.
The proposed legislation would establish a waiver that allows institutions to notify a student's parents or guardians in the event of a mental health crisis. This aims to strengthen communication channels between schools and families when timely intervention is most critical.
This initiative was sparked by the recent tragic losses of a Xavier University student and former LSU football player Kyren Lacy. Rep. Boyd emphasized that proactive communication can play a vital role in supporting student well-being and preventing such tragedies.
“It’s about early communication,” Boyd said, “so families can help guide their students toward the resources they need.”
